Uruguay has joined a growing number of nations providing a laptop for every child attending state primary school. Uruguay is part of the One Laptop Per Child organization.

In January 2005 the MIT Media Lab launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), was created, which is independent of MIT.

The backers of the One Laptop Per Child project are looking at the possibility of selling the machine to the public. One idea would require customers to buy two laptops at once - with the second going to the developing world.

AMD's PIC (personal Internet computer), an inexpensive Windows CE-based computer aimed at developing nations, has successfully booted Linux, according to a Siamese Wiki devoted to the OLPC (One Laptop per Child) initiative. The Wiki shows the PIC runing an Edubuntu image created for the OLPC project.

The U.S.-based "One Laptop per Child" project aims to deliver up to 30 computers to Thailand in October and 500 more in November, Thaksin said in a nationwide radio broadcast on Saturday.

OLPC program director for Middle East and Africa Khaled Hassounah confirmed to DesktopLinux.com July 31 that Nigeria has indeed committed to buy 1 million machines, and then revealed that Brazil, Argentina, and Thailand also have placed similar commitments.
